Traded my Multistrada for R1200GS

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Even though I’m in love with my Multi and it almost completely satisfies my needs, I have an itch to get new bike. I have been looking into R1200GS for quite a while and always wondered what makes this bike so popular.

So I had to have one to see what it’s like. Test rides proved useless because it takes a while to understand a bike. For example, my Multi grew on me in about 2 weeks, it wasn’t love at first sight.

How can one get to ride GS on daily basis without taking the plunge on the purchase? That is right, trade with your buddy who wants to convert you to big BMW. And so I did I will probably ride GS for at least a week, this should give me plenty of time to understand the nature of it.

Based on my short experience with the bike (2 commutes so far) my impressions are far from positive. However I would like to reserve my judgement till I get more miles under my belt. I will keep you posted.

Used BMW values - what gives?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

As I secretly lurk around shopping for R1200GS (oops, I just let the secret out), I can’t help but notice that many (if not most) BMW sellers are out of touch with reality when it comes to pricing their steeds.

I know some bikes have been farkled to death, but that doesn’t add much value when it’s time to sell. I know that most paid MSRP + taxes and fees, but that loss is a part of the game. Used bikes cannot cost as much as new. Period. You roll it out of dealer’s showroom, you lose 10%. Ride it for a year or two, and say good bye to another 20% (and I’m being reasonable here, some vehicles depreciate even more) When one can pick up brand new loaded 09 R1200GS ADV for about 17-18K out the door, why would I pay that much (or even more) for used one?

www.mcnews.com has very reasonable used bike price guide (http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/usedbike/2010JulyUsdBkGd.pdf). I believe it’s based on NADA and to my experienced eye it appears extremely accurate for all bikes. Now please tell me where can I find 09 Adventure for $12540. That is reasonable. I’m ready to buy. Please be as far as possible :D

Annual Bike Fever

Somebody please prescribe me some kind of medicine to cure my sickness. I sure cannot be the only one with this kind of disease.

I absolutely cannot keep the bike for over one year (or less). I usually get tired of it as soon as I finish tuning it to my preferences. It usually results in huge losses because $$ for mods and depreciation are not coming back. Over the past 10 years I probably went through at least 20 bikes. Talk about money pit.

I have perfectly set up Multistrada that I love and that does everything really well. I should probably keep it forever because it suits me so well. Instead, I’m drooling at other bikes, lusting for GSA at the moment. Why why why?

Is there a way to remain monogamous in your motorcycle relationship?
