I was riding back home from the office last night. Merging from one freeway to another. End up close to another rider on a pretty new R1 with two small saddle bags. We were on both sides of one of the left most lanes. He apparently intended to take the space between the 2 left most lanes where I was riding. I promptly slowed down and waved for him to merge in front of me. I usually do that for all riders, especially for the ones that ride bikes smaller than my Aprilia Futura is a little wider and heavier than say SV650, R1/R6 or a Monster. Therefore making it slightly less effective at lane splitting. The guy respectfully declined letting me go first. Ok, thank you kindly, I took him up on that offer and sped up.

Anytime I’d look in my rear views the guy would always be close to me. I was confused. He did tell me that he was going to follow me yet he stayed on my tail as if he wanted to pass me. At the same time he was not proactive in trying to do that either. I was confused. I picked up a faster pace, the guy was still on my tail. We rode like this for the next 10 minutes till I reached my exit and merged to the right most lane. When I look left the guy was going fairly fast in between the 2 left most lanes. I was not sure if his “new” pace was faster than the one I’d set earlier as I was slowing down.

I felt bad. If I in fact was slower than the R1 guy then he must have been calling me unpleasant things in his head. On the other hand it did not seem like my pace was that slow for him if slow at all. I was perplexed. I still am …
