One of the Big Boys
written by sideout
This statement would qualify for a willing suspension of disbelief. In other words a delusion. What made me think I am one of the big boys now? Well, let me tell you.
I was riding cautiously splitting lanes in a dense Friday traffic earlier today when I spotted a rider ahead of me. He was doing the same at a slower speed. The guy was riding a street cruiser type motorbikes. Not something that won’t allow you to comfortably split lanes. So that reason was out of the picture. “May be he is cautious because of a stronger than usual wind” - I caught myself thinking as I was closing in on him. After my trial by fire (or by wind rather) the wind has got to be close to a tornado to freak me out.

I had no intention to push the pace. He was probably 5-10 mph slower which is insignificant. As I was getting closer the rider ahead of me shifted left and let me pass. “Ok, thank you kindly my fellow rider. I will respectfully accept your offer”. So I went by waving a thanks. “Well, he is going to catch up soon. I am not as good and fast of a rider” - I thought. Looking in the rear view mirror I saw him falling behind further and further away. Feeling a sudden rush of joy and excitement. “Calm down buddy, you are not that great. Your riding experienced is less than one thousand miles and a couple of canyon rides only. Chill out.” - said the sane part of my brain.
Wow, so am I getting better at that? Probably not to the extent that I want to think I am. But that moment will stay in my memory as the moment when I no longer was the slowest rider on the road. Happy Friday everyone.
