Swimming with Sharks

Today is the day. I have to do it some day. That’s what I told myself last night after I got back home from my evening ride. I will ride my motorcycle to work tomorrow. It’d be the first time I ride in the daylight and with a lot of enemies around me.

I decided that I’d leave around 9 to have a little less enemies around me. And of course I won’t take the freeway. Not yet. Here we go. I leave my house. I get up to speeds of 45-55 mph, nothing too crazy. I split some lanes once in a while when I feel it is safe. Everything goes as planned. I am half way there. I feel confident. Not too confident of course as it is only my first month riding. I am not that stupid. I am not a good rider. But confident enough to hang with the big boys - the cars. Then all of the sudden - trouble.

As I am in the turn going at about 50-55 mph I see that the traffic in my lane is completely stopped. The cars in the right lane are slowly moving. Initial reaction proves me as a complete amateur rider and a total car driver. I hit the brakes. My bike starts skidding. Oh snap. Then the time slows down a little bit. First thought - what the f*ck do I do, I am going to hit that car. Second thought - what did they teach your sorry ass in the riding coarse. Oh, ok, the bike should be upright to hit the brakes, so I let go off the brakes and gain back the control of the bike. Thought number three - no time, weave around the stopped cars. That’s it. I weave, my bike is upright because I am already out of the treacherous turn. I slow down.

To cut the story short the only other casualty of war today was me stalling twice going straight off the light. I thought I was in the first when actually I was in the second.

When I hit the last turn going into the office park garage my last challenge was to go down a somewhat steep slope of the garage entrance and not drop my bike. Surprisingly it was not that difficult.

Finally I am back, the battle is over, my enemies did not succeed in my demise. But I did have a close call. The one you remember and learn from. Happy Friday.
